![]() Stern Pinball Calls in Ghostbusters for Next Pinball Hit Here's the feature matrix comparing the three different models.įinally for now, here's Stern's press release announcing the game. These do away with the traditional solenoid kicker to repel the ball and instead use electro-magnets below the playfield, much like the Magna-Flip feature on the powerfield in Twilight Zone. The Ecto Goggles feature with simulated projected imageĮlsewhere, the more expensive variants tend to replace the flat plastics of the Pro with custom moulded 3D modelsĪnother big change for the LE and Premium models is the use of Magna-slings. This projects animated models of various ghosts onto the playfield and is combined with a playfield sensor to detect hits on the holographic image. The most significant addition feature of the Limited Edition is the Ecto Goggles device. The Limited Edition features different cabinet art and bright green trim, along with extended side rails with button area protectors. The Premium uses a similar cabinet design as the Pro with some extra colour accents, different backbox side art, all combined with the playfield from the Limited Edition. On the Premium and LE models it can also move across the playfield like the Scarecrow bash-ball in Batman.Īll models also feature a triple Newton ball mechanism at the Public Library area of the playfield.Īs you would expect, the Premium and Limited Edition models add several extra playfield and trim features. ![]() While the display is monochromatic, the playfield artwork is a veritable riot of colour, with purple a predominant theme but no part of the colour spectrum unrepresented.Īll models feature a rotating illuminated Slimer which is suspended over the playfield. You can see that Ghostbusters continues to use the traditional red LED dot-matrix display rather than an LCD panel which it was originally thought might premiere with this title. The Pro cabinet features the team's iconic ECTO-1 vehicle The translites in the Pro, Premium and LE are very similar, but do have a few changes, especially on the right side. Ghostbusters is a John Trudeau design, with artwork by Jeremy Packer who goes under the name Zombie Yeti and who created much of the artwork for John Popadiuk's ill-fated Magic Girl project.Īs you can see, the game is based on the 1984 original movie and the 1989 sequel featuring Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver, rather than the upcoming reboot which features an all-female lead. However, today Stern Pinball released pictures of the Pro, Premium and Limited Edition models to much acclaim. ![]() So this is very welcome news, hopefully that becomes standard as an option from here on out.It may not have exactly been much of secret that Stern's next game was going to be Ghostbusters, and the backglass artwork and snippets of the playfield design may have been leaked several weeks ago. As I’ve stated before, one of the oddest things I’ve come across in running an arcade is how many people think that the pinball table is broken because they don’t see the flashing START button to the left…it is far worse for locations that don’t have an attendant on staff. Thanks to some lobbying from Sean McDermott of All Castle Games (my podcasting partner) and a little video that I did, the programmer for Ghostbusters and Game of Thrones has stated that an auto-start option will be included in the next code update for those two games. Something to keep an eye on.Īuto-Start Feature Coming To Ghostbusters and Game Of Thrones Pinball It also will change how the game plays but it will depend on how the final setup works. ![]() My concern about it is the balls becoming magnetized and causing issues in the trough(which I’ve seen happen in other pinball machines that just use a single magnet)…perhaps there is a degaussing solution that can be put in place for when the ball drains to clear it of any magnetic leftovers. It is still early code so it is likely that some adjustments will be made this is also something that looks like it is being tested on a Premium or LE model and definitely not the Pro. Such is the case with a short video shown by Stern Pinball today where they are showing new “Magnasling” technology, which could potentially replace traditional solenoid & rubber based slingshots (the two triangular things found above the flippers) : Now that the field is competitive, we’re seeing the fruits of new ideas taking place. Isn’t competition great? For years, the pinball scene had no competition going on and it showed by there being no new innovations in the games.
